A. BVEP 'Laila'

Laila is a pure species BVEP (short for Black Velvet Eastern Panama) that has been in my collection ever since growing her first leaf. The species is actually more correctly referred to as antolakii. I just personally prefer its pre-naming placeholder name – or rather the abbreviation of it (which I pronounce BEEE-VEP if anyone was wondering).

Laila is a cross between two select specimens named ‘Round’ and ‘RA1’. Round was used as the seed parent and is a seed grown specimen from Rory Antolak (yes, the species was named after him) but it’s unknown which specific plants was used to breed it. RA1 was used as the pollen parent and is also a plant from Rory Antolak but is instead a wild collected clone – and a very beautiful one!

I personally think Laila is one of the most beautiful BVEPs out there, if not the most if I dare say it – and I know I’m not the only one saying this. She was the first plant I ever gave a name and she is named after my mom. So, she definitely has a place very close to my heart.

Compared to my other BVEPs she has always been smooth sailing, never giving me any troubles whatsoever. She grew up in ambient conditions and has the most incredible leaf shape with almost pitch-black foliage and beautiful soft pink veins. She is simply to die for!
